Pain Management

Our anesthesiologists are trained in comprehensive services for chronic, acute and end-stage pain. Pain management is provided for cancer palliation, post-operative pain, chronic back pain, headaches and facial pain, neuralgia and other chronic pain problems. We focus on easing pain, reducing pain-related disability, and improving quality of life using a variety of therapies and services.

The Pain Management Center evaluates and treats chronic pain - severe pain that has proven unresponsive to conservative therapy.

Areas of expertise include:

  • Cancer pain
  • Pediatric pain
  • Acute post-operative pain

Following patient evaluation, a multimodality treatment plan is developed to provide therapy for the central and peripheral components of a patient's particular pain syndrome. Often, more than one of the following treatment strategies must be used simultaneously:

  • Injection therapy (epidural steroids, somatic and sympathetic blocks, facet joint injection and trigger point injections)
  • Electrical nerve stimulation (dorsal column stimulator)
  • Myeloscopy/epiduroscopy
  • Radio frequency lessoning
  • Cryoablation
  • Infusion pumps
  • Physical therapy

Treatment Goals

  • To eliminate the source of pain, if possible, or to reduce it to a tolerable level
  • To help eliminate depression
  • To eliminate drug dependency
  • To educate the patient about chronic pain
  • To aid the patient in functioning within pain limits
  • To help return the patient to gainful employment and a fulfilling life
